The importance of a soluble fibre like Oats is understated in today’s age. Oats is great for diabetics and is versatile to adapt into Indian dishes as well.
This is again a one-pot meal (and made for just myself) as I wanted to be sure that the kids would love it as much as I did. I had previously cooked Lauki dal (with tempering intact) so, that reduced the cook time drastically.
Either way, it doesn’t take more than 15 mins to put together this rather yummy khichdi Goes great with a simple boondi raita / onion – cucumber raita for lunch / brunch on hot summery days like these 🙂
Prep time: 15 mins, cook time – 10 mins, Serves – 1
What you need:
- Cooked Lauki Moong dal (you can simply soak and cook 1/4 cup of plain yellow moong dal for 1 whistle) – 1/2 cup
- Oats – 1/2 cup – I used plain rolled oats
- Salt – to taste
- Homemade Sambhar powder – 1 TBSP
- Any veggies – carrots / beans / peas – about 1/4 cup – I used 1 medium tomato and 1/2 cup of broccoliÂ
- Garam Masala – 1/2 TBSP
- Oil – 1 tsp
- Tempering : Cumin seeds, chopped green chillies (2), diced ginger 1/2 inch

Such a healthy and yummy looking kichidi with oats and moong dal. Good one
Thanks Sushma !
That looks so tempting Kalyani. Oats khichdi is my go-to meal when I am alone. The mango pickle takes my focus off 🙂
hehe ! Thanks Harini… I made (and ate) the khichdi ONLY for the pickle :p .. having BM also helped !
Healthy and filling khichdi. I have to try these savory oat dishes for my husband who loves oats. I am kinda partial to quinoa and millets.
Oats is a relatively new thing for me too, Suma although I make Dosas and Molagapudi with it ! But I did like the taste and texture of this khichdi a lot 🙂
Even I tried a kichadi with oats will post next week… easy and yummy food…
That is a delicious bowl of oats kichdi. With papad and raita, this would make an amazing meal.
This is a delicious quick fix Kalyani. Surely must have made a filling meal.
Oats kichadi with mangai oorugai… oh so yum only. Love adding both sambar powder and garam masala.
wow this is a nice recipe. I would say a good use of even leftover dals. Would love to try this
I make one pot meal kind of version of oats khichdi mixed with dal and veggies. I loved your version and I also think as Renu said ,can make it with any leftover dal.
