Do you really need a reason to eat cake, or chocolate for that matter ?? From Vegan Chill Chocolate Mousse to Eggless Double Choco Zucchini Cake, Brazilian Coffee Choco Shots , Choco Orange Muffins and many, many more treats with Chocolate, it simply warms our heart to find another quick dessert that’s easy on the tummy as much as it is quick to make.
Yes, its steamed, and we loved the soft texture. Added to the fact that its completely chocolatey and made with wholewheat flour, this was one winner of a dish 🙂 Dare I say it was way softer and yummier than the oven baked Chocolate cakes I have ever made ! No butter, no eggs, yet …. stunning !! (yes, I am running out of adjectives).
If I may say so myself, this is an amazinggggggg steamed Chocolate Cake !
Even not being a chocolate person, I think this was a fitting way to celebrate any occasion from Valentine’s to birthdays , from anniversaries to promotions, from the arrival of a new one or simply to dig into when craving strikes.
This is one of the most sought after treats at home, and honestly I have lost count of how many times I have made it when the kids were younger, for a quick choco craving.

So, get the ingredients with these pantry basics, and bake this 🙂 Non-oven bakers can also enjoy this rather delectable treat.

What you need to make Wholewheat Steamed Chocolate Cake “
1 cup = 150 ml
Dry Ingredients:
- 1.25 cups atta
- 2/3 cup powdered sugar
- 3 TBSP of dutch processed cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 2/3 tsp Baking Powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 inch cinnamon – powdered fine
Wet ingredients:
- 3/4 cup yoghurt
- 3/4 cup oil
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Ganache Topping : (optional but recommended, or simply use store bought Chocolate Syrup)
- 1/2 cup chocochips – 1/2 cup
- 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp hot water
How to make Steamed Chocolate Cake :
- Sieve dry ingredients well ; mix wet ingredients into the dry ingredients till no dry streaks are seen.
- Pour in lightly greased moulds ( you can use normal steel bowls – but I used ramekins)
- Cover tightly with Aluminium foil and prick small holes on top to let out the steam (see pictures)
- Keep a steamer ready with boiling water.
- Steam the ramekins or the cake moulds for 22/24 mins or till fork comes clean (Steaming time might vary, but keep an eye after 22nd minute, overcooking makes them rubbery)
- Makes three 4 oz + three 2oz cake
- To make the Chocolate ganache, melt chocochips in a microwave in bursts of 15 seconds till slightly melted, whisk in hot water vigorously to a thick pouring consistency. Add extract and use immediately as topping.
- Let the cakes cool down slightly. Un mould them carefully, drizzle warm chocolate ganache / choco syrup and devour them immediately 🙂

Cake looks decadent with chocolate ganache. I never tried a steamed cake. Bookmarked.
