Homemade applesauce is something I make almost every year especially during Sep-december as we get good quality apples then. In India, there are no specific varieties, but choose those which aren’t too tart or hard to bite into. Basically cooking apples work best
FAQs to make the best homemade applesauce
What kind of apples can be used?
I used Red Delicious, but Gala variety also works. If you are outside India, choose a ripe, sweet red variety, although some recipes are made from Granny Smith apples too.
Does apple sauce contain sugar?
Again, it’s a personal preference. I make them both ways, but if I am adding BROWN SUGAR (only!!) to the applesauce, I use it up in a recipe immediately so I remember how much sugar it contains and can adjust the baking recipe accordingly.
What else can apple sauce contain?
Lemon juice is one of the key ingredients, as is cinnamon (either stick / powder form). Other add-ons are usually unsweetened apple juice which is totally optional, but I prefer using it.
How long can applesauce be stored?
WIth a good canning / preserving technique, it can be stored for months under refrigeration. As I am lucky to have apples (almost) year round, I prefer to make a batch and use it up quickly.
What else can Applesauce be used as ?
As spread on toasted bread, topping for pancakes. Personally I prefer to use it in quick bakes as a wonderful egg replacer.

Can I make this in an Instant Pot too?
Yes, definitely. I shall be posting that method shortly. But it definitely works to make a LARGE batch in an Instant pot, pretty quickly. If using an Instant Pot, why don’t you check out this Quick Date Tamarind Chutney to make a large batch

A good way to preserve apples as the sauce is a very useful condiment. Love to have it with oats, add to smoothies and bakes of course. A useful recipe, and like how you’ve used brown sugar instead of white.
